I can’t think of anything more quintessentially fall than apple picking. Near our favorite spot to camp in Lincoln National Forest is Cadwallader Mountain Farms: a little family owned orchard that allows you to pick fruit seasonally. We headed straight there after breakfast and returned to our camper with several bags of apples.

There’s nothing that compares to the taste of freshly picked apples so we got right to work making a stovetop apple crisp. This one can easily be made over a campfire but I always make it on our little camper stove top. Whether you’re camping or at home all you need to do is slice two or three apples thinly then saute them in a little bit of butter over medium heat until they begin to soften. Next add about a quarter cup of sugar and some spices; I used 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon, half a teaspoon ground nutmeg, and half a teaspoon ground cloves. If you happen to have some bourbon on hand add a little nip, you won’t regret it. Stir to combine and cook until the sauce is syrupy and the apples are tender. Remove from heat then top with about a cup of granola. Serve as is or with ice cream.
We read a little story from our Rooted Childhood Autumn Collection as we ate our apple crisp and it made for such a sweet afternoon. In addition to “The Apple Star Story” which tells how a fairy gave the apple its star this guide is full of everything you could ever want for a sweet and memorable fall. You’ll find poems, songs, crafts, recipes, and book lists that are both whimsical and easy to use. So many of the items in these seasonal collections have become treasured traditions in our home.

The next morning we began our school day by reading a book about the life cycle of an apple. We practiced spelling and reading the word apple and put together a felt puzzle to review the anatomy of an apple. We couldn’t resist arranging the little felt seeds in the shape of a star and retelling the story of the Apple Star to each other. I still have several pounds of apples so I’d love to know your favorite apple recipes. I’m dreaming of apple cake!
